Hello Again and welcome back to my blog. This is the final post in a series detailing the build of a pair of medicine cabinets in white cypress. In this post I will be fitting the scissor hinges and catch to the cabinet, then finishing the cabinet in shellac and finally installing it in the wall.
I started by setting my mortising gauge to the desired depth that the hinge will fit into the cabinet. This measurement will be accurate for the doors and case.
After scribing my lines I begin carefully paring out the mortise. The mortising gauge (kibiki) continues to remain helpful in this instance, as I pair the mortise I will continue scribing the sides to keep them sharp and accurate.
And the finished cutout. I continued this process on the opposing side of the cabinet and on the doors.
The installed hinge.
I completed the remaining hinges and then located and installed the catch. The catch mortises were started slightly differently, but completed very similarly.
I completed the case by removing all brass, then shellacking the case in super blonde shellac. The shellac was applied in a wipe-on fashion to keep the effect of the finish very subtle.
Excuse the drywall which will be detailed very soon.
And finally the inside of the box, already serving its intended purpose.
I hope that you have enjoyed following along with this build. I have certainly enjoyed detailing the process and posting it.
I will post up additional photos when the drywall detailing and paint are completed.
Thank you for visiting, hope to see you again soon.

Really like how clean and simple this piece looks. (I know some of the joinery was anything but “simple.”) Well done.
Hope to see more of your builds in the future.
Thank you Dan!
I’ve got another build coming up soon, and may begin to archive some of my previous work as well.
Cheers
Brian

Have enjoyed a lot reading along this build. You make crisp work and describe it a clear and simple language. And great photos too. Makes me feel like i need to build a cabinet like that right away – and that, i guess, is the whole point of reading ww’ing blogs..
Looking forward to read about more of your work!
