Jewelry Cabinet

Hello and welcome to my blog.  Late 2014 I was requested to build a jewelry cabinet.  I proposed that the jewelry cabinet should feature large pull out drawers, similar to a plan file cabinet, that would allow a good representation of the jewelry collection and provide for easy organization.

Building the jewelry cabinet began by selecting a slab of walnut to resaw and book match to make the case exterior.  The continuous length of material was joined up with dovetails at the corners to create a seamless look about the exterior case.

The remaining stock was cut into rails and stiles then put aside for later consideration.

The case is made thin (5/8″) to remain light, it is strengthened and supported by a system of web frames dovetailed into the case sides that sure up the case.

Grooves were cut into the web frames and interior liners fitted to bring the drawer sides in and away from the case sides and subsequently the doors when they are opened.

Next the bottom panel was constructed and prepared to join up with the case bottom utilizing half blind dovetails.   At this juncture the base is also constructed and interlocking joinery planned.

After the case bottom was attached an internal step was created to allow room for supporting crossmembers which would tie into the base and join up to the case sides.

Finally a stretcher is run along the floor to support the base uprights and provide additional footing.

With the cabinet now standing upright, it was time to frame and install the back panel.

Followed by the doors.  Both the back panel and doors are fitted up with a joined frame which utilizes haunched through tenons.

The next step was to line the door panels with black leather, then create a series of battens so that hanging chains could be kept along the door nicely.

Now with the doors completed, it was time to move onto building the many drawers which lined the case.  The bottom drawers made tall to house delicates and the upper drawers made thin for jewelry.

After dovetailing the drawer sides the drawers were then fitted for bottoms and grooves cutout to function as drawer pulls.

The final step before finishing was to build and install door handles.

And finally the finished and installed case, ready to be enjoyed for many years to follow.

I hope that you have enjoyed following along with this shortened version of a previous build.
